Between trees and bytes: Immanuel Janssen, Deputy Manager DC IT Solutions - Team Operations & Scout

You've been a scout for a long time. What do you enjoy most about it?

Having adventures outdoors is the best thing. I love hiking and making fires. The whole thing combined in a hike or camp for several days at a time is simply the perfect balance to everyday office life.

What tasks do you have as a scout?

The activities are very varied, such as making fires, building structures out of wood and learning a lot about nature. Activities such as collecting garbage, charity runs etc. are of course also included.

A sense of responsibility is very important to scouts. Are there any other aspects that can be applied to your job?

Above all, teamwork. A camp only works, for example, if everyone does their job conscientiously. One person has to make a fire, another cooks, another chops wood and two others do the washing up. And that's just breakfast! Everyone plays their part in the overall performance and ensures that everyone has a good time and a successful camp together. The important thing is that everyone enjoys themselves and takes on the tasks that suit them.

You also hold a management position at DTS. Do you have a specific strategy for motivating your professional and volunteer colleagues?

By leading the way. Ideally, you enable your colleagues or children to reach their full potential. To do this, you have to set the path and/or the goal, but also run with them, i.e. specifically promote the development of their strengths. You also have to deal specifically with the person's task and ideally understand first-hand where individual challenges lie.

What exactly does a Deputy Manager DC IT Solutions do?

The core tasks include the operation of our data center and the operational management of our managed services. My team and I are also responsible for ensuring that customers' 2nd and 3rd level problems are solved quickly and effectively. Planning new services, building new server rooms, personnel planning, discussions with customers and much more are of course also part of the job. The list is very long. (laughs)

Both in IT and in scouting, unforeseen challenges can arise. How do you deal with these, both professionally and as a volunteer?

In both areas, I have to make a decision quickly. Even if you have to choose between two evils, it's still much better to choose a considered evil than to put decisions on the back burner. In IT, you don't really have much time to bring new technologies to market and you have to react quickly when new services set back. In the Scouts, this ability is sometimes even more important, because if a child falls into the water on a sailing trip and has problems, you don't think long about how best to help. If the lifebuoy is not to hand, you improvise or you jump in after them.

Finally, a somewhat more specific IT question: What trends do you see in the area of data center solutions in 2025?

This year, DTS is taking its first steps towards its own AI and AI in the company. This could definitely develop into future-oriented projects.
