The danger
DDoS, brute force, phishing, malware, ransomware - these are just a few examples of typical cyber threats. In the last 12 months, half of German companies were affected by cyber attacks. No wonder, with an average of 20,000 security breaches in the company. The first digital disaster in Germany lasted a full 207 days. At the same time, companies need an average of 20.9 hours to respond to a cyber attack at all. The attack vectors are becoming increasingly specific. There are now even automated attacks that search for security vulnerabilities, gain access rights or take control of IT infrastructures.
In 2021, almost 150,000 cases of cybercrime were recorded in Germany alone. In comparison, there were still around 35,000 cases in 2007. Not even 1/3 of the cases can be solved. In addition, an enormous number of unreported cases can be assumed. The BKA assumes that for every officially registered attack, there could be nine more that go undetected. If this assumption is taken to its logical conclusion, there are around 1.5 million attacks per year in Germany alone, i.e. more than 4,000 per day. Any questions?
The goals
What are the intentions? Hackers are primarily interested in industrial espionage, sabotage, data theft and blackmail. Accordingly, it is not only attractive for large, internationally active corporations to capture sensitive data and know-how. This also applies to small and medium-sized companies. Especially as they often have some catching up to do when it comes to cyber security.
The damage
Whether data loss, identity theft, ransom extortion with encrypted data, system failure or a production standstill. The consequences of cyberattacks can be absolutely life-threatening. The damage caused by cybercrime reaches new record levels every year. In Germany, successful cyberattacks cost companies on average three times as much per year as they pay in sales tax to the state. The international average for encryption, for example, is 211,529 US dollars.
But here, too, the actual targets of the attacks must be taken into account. Downtime or extortion, i.e. primarily financial loss as a direct result of an attack, account for less than half of the damage. The downstream costs of technology theft, loss of sales, data protection violations, legal disputes and damage to image are almost twice as high.
The problem
Only 16% of German companies have increased their IT security budget during or after the coronavirus crisis. Yet the risks and figures are well known. A large number of measures are required to secure the huge attack surface. Anyone who wants to control all components of the IT infrastructure independently today needs expert-level security knowledge and, of course, an immense amount of time. Not to mention the other daily tasks. Many companies simply don't know where to start. The result is a patchwork of isolated IT security solutions. The operational costs increase massively, which often seems disproportionate, especially for small and medium-sized companies.
