Green IT? What is that?
Yes, green IT is a buzzword. No, Green IT is not an empty buzzword without content. The CO2 emissions caused by IT have remained largely constant in recent years. In absolute terms, however, they are roughly the same as global air traffic. According to estimates, IT will cause around 8% of global CO2 emissions by 2025. It is not just electricity consumption that is a problem. The growing IT infrastructure, including the extraction of the corresponding raw materials and the increasing amount of waste, are also a huge ecological burden.
Green IT is a collective term for a wide range of measures to overcome these challenges through: environmentally friendly, efficient and resource-conserving production, use and disposal; extending life cycles; limiting requirements; effective and efficient technologies.
Many construction sites. Many possibilities.
The consensus is that digitalisation will hardly be possible without a climate-neutral transformation. Sustainable IT must therefore contribute to reducing climate-damaging emissions. For companies, this is easier said than done. But with increasing awareness and appropriate technology, there are also suitable solutions for small and medium-sized companies. The cloud reduces the need for in-house, high-performance hardware. Instead, only what is actually needed is used or consumed from third-party providers. Processes can generally be optimised a great deal. However, smart solutions, e.g. for automating energy consumption, are also extremely helpful.
The average life cycle of a PC has fallen from seven to two years in 30 years. The devices do not break any sooner. Targeted, sustainable procurement and recycling can have a significant effect. There are also more and more platforms and structures for the systematic reuse of used IT devices and hardware. Not all processes and work steps always require the latest of the latest. Last but not least, like already mentioned, cloud makes it possible to use apps with any end device, simply with a browser and functioning internet.
Green IT as an opportunity
‘With great power comes great responsibility’ - this is especially true for IT. But green IT is not just a challenge. It is also a significant opportunity. If a company invests in sustainability today, it can not ‘only’ protect the environment tomorrow, but also benefit from greater efficiency and important optimisations and create competitive advantages. In fact, sustainable IT should also be an important part of a future-proof corporate strategy. Why? To save costs (e.g. acquisition, operating or energy costs), ensure efficient IT operations, conserve raw materials and enhance your own market position, credibility and image.
